Towing or roadside assistance will pay for a tow truck to transport your car when disabled. It may also assist you in the changing of a tire or in starting a stalled vehicle. Drivers in cold weather climates often find this coverage useful during the winter season.
If you have this coverage added to your auto insurance policy, you will have to pay for the service up front and submit a bill to your auto carrier for reimbursement. For that reason alone, you may decide to save money by omitting this coverage.
If you decide you would like this coverage, you may want to purchase a separate roadside assistance plan apart from your auto policy. You will get more complete coverage through a motor club and you will not be submitting any claims on your auto policy. Some car manufacturers include roadside assistance with the purchase of a new automobile. You may have this covered and not even know it!
Most carriers will claim that they will not penalize or surcharge drivers for a towing claim. If you have other claims, tickets or accidents, together with towing claims, however, it may be a factor in raising rates or even in a policy cancellation.
